BEAUTY ARTICLE SWEET HONEY LIPS: VALENTINE'S SPECIAL
Our lips is considered to be one of the most sexual, and sensual parts of a woman's body. Psychologists reckon that one of the reasons is because they mimic the appearance and sexual swelling of the woman's vagina (vulva,) and also because lips are considered to be a secondary sexual organ.
Just like our fingerprints, all our kiss marks are unique, and are never alike.
Lips were not only commonly used in Shakespeare's plays and sonnets,
"Those lips that love's own hand did make,"
Leonardo Da Vinci spent twelve years of his life to just paint Mona Lisa's lips.
And did you know? Alfred Wolfram currently holds the Guiness Records of kissing 8001 people within 8 hours (that's a kiss every 3.6 seconds!)
OUR LIP STRUCTURE The skin on our lips, unlike the skin on our face, is actually thinner with only about 3 to 5 layers of cells. Because of this, our blood vessels are able appear through the skin on our lips, which is why it appears with more of a red flush. Unlike the skin on our face, the lip skin does not contain sweat pores or sebacceous glands which are responsible for the secretion of sweat and our skin's natural oil- sebum.
Therefore, it does not have the usual protection of NMF (our skin's Natural Moisturizing Factor which is sweat and sebum combined) that helps to keep skin smooth, moisturized, inhibiting pathogens and regulate warmth.
This is why our lips constantly longs for moisture.
SWEET HONEY LIP SCRUB This simple, DIY sweet honey lip scrub is great for those dry, chappy lips desperate for a quick fix. It gently exfoliates your lips, whilst softening and nourishing it- leaving you with nothing but sweet and soft, kissable lips.
WHAT YOU NEED: - BROWN SUGAR - HONEY - LEMON (OPTIONAL) - JOJOBA OIL, SWEET ALMOND OIL, OR SESAME OIL (OPTIONAL) - A SPOON - SMALL EMTPY LIP BALM CONTAINER
The secret recipe for having the softest lips ever! Brown sugar helps to gently exfoliate the dead skin cells on your lips, whilst honey helps to deeply nourish, leaving your lips feeling silky soft.
Little things that make the sweetest difference: - Adding a few drops of lemon will give your lips vitamin C which helps repair and rejuvenate cells- promoting healthier looking lips. - Jojoba Oil is an excellent moisturizer, which helps to provide the skin all the moisture it needs. - Sweet Almond Oil is sweet and skin-lover.
STEP 1: Take a small teaspoon of brown sugar and crush them into tiny little pieces.
STEP 2: Add a small teaspoon of honey, and mix them well together. You have now created the simplest lip scrub, and the perfect lip scrub base for more beautiful ingredients to customize into your own.
STEP 3: CUSTOMIZE The fun part.
- A few drops of Lemon juice will help to provide the lips with Vitamin C and valuable nutrients.
What to do with the rest of the lemon and honey? Whilst your at it, cut the lemon into slices, add some warm water to make a nice honey and lemon drink, which is high in vitamins and anti-oxidants- keeping you clear from the flu!
- Jojoba Oil has a natural composition that is similar to our skin's sebum, and is rich in vitamins and minerals. It helps to dramtically soften and moisturize the skin. It also acts as a natural preservative, and is considered to be one of the most effective ingredient with the best affinity to skin.
- Sweet Almond Oil is a great skin conditioner that can help soften the skin, and retain it's moisture balance. It is suitable for highly sensitive skin.
- Sesame Oil an excellent base oil that helps to soften and moisturize the skin, aswell as having anti-inflammatory properties.
- Peppermint Oil helps to refreshen the lips, giving it a soft menthol treatment!
- Instead of Honey, you can also use Olive Oil which is high in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, essential for healthy skin.
You can buy these healthy oils in your local health foods store.
STEP 4: APPLY Using a cotton bud, take a small amount of your lovely honey lip scrub and apply onto clean dry lips. You may wish to dampen your lips with warm water beforehand. Apply like you would with lip balm, using your finger. Make gentle smooth massaging movements across the bottom and upper lips. Smile and do the same.
STEP 5: FINISH Using a damp cotton pad, remove the product gently. Follow your lip treatment to finish. Vaseline does an excellent job.
Result: Baby soft lips that feel soft and plump. No more dry, flaky and chappy lips.
Exfoliate at night, once or twice a week as needed. You will find that lipstick stays on for longer, and kisses last for longer! Always apply a lip moisturizer after exfoliating to keep lips moisturized.
Be environmentally-friendly! Put the rest of the product into your old little lip balm container, which should last you a couple more uses!
tip* Bobbi Brown do 'empties' to store your skincare products in different sized containers. Perfect for girls on the go. Muji also do a great selection of empties if you have no empty lip balm containers that you can re-use.
SWEET HONEY LIP BALMS
Lip balms are an essential must-have for everyone, and even for Men. Nivea has made this real easy by releasing its 'Lipcare for Men.' But to be honest, what's wrong with using the others?
Vaseline has always been my holy grail of all lip moisturizers. It's very cheap, and great for rough hands, elbows, knees and even feet.
Burt's Bees has been noted for it's excellent lip balms (and for the bees who created it.) It contains beeswax, sunflower oil, coconut oil, sweet almond oil, soybean oil, lanolin, vitamin E.. all ingredients to help moisturize and nourish your lips.
Carmex is a very popular one, and I'm sure you've all heard of it (especially in the U.S) It contains SPF 15 to give you sun protection, aswell as beeswax, lanolin, cocoa seed butter, and petrolatum (a key ingredient in Vaseline.) It also contains active ingredients such as menthol, camphor and phenol which have effective anti-bacterial and germicidalproperties.
Kiehl's Lip Balm (cranberry )has recieved Cosmopolitan's Best Of The Best Awards 2008 for the best lip treatment. It is also one of my favourite lip balms.
EMYLI'S TIPS: - Apply vaseline onto lips before you sleep and wake up to beautiful, soft lips! - Apply your lip moisturizer before applying make-up, and allow it to absorb before applying lipstick. It makes an excellent base.
